After years of researching all those baby products…she started a business. Shawn runs Blue Skye Baby and baby consulting/planning service. Shawn helps new moms, families adopting children, anyone who’s life is about to be turned around by the arrival of a child who needs so many things and they just don’t know where to start. A baby planner can save a lot of time and money for new parents-to-be, keeping them from buying the unnecessary things and focusing on the things that will really help and work for their family.
1. Tell us a little about your business and how/why you started it?
I am a baby planner and I get parents ready for baby. I have many resources and vendors readily available to make this time in their lives less stressful and more enjoyable. I have done countless hours of research to be at the top of my game when it comes to the baby industry, which is on going and I love it. My background and education are geared towards children and when I was pregnant, I really enjoyed searching out the best baby gear for myself and my son, and one day my husband said I should do this as a business and well, I took his advice
2. Are you mainly locally based, or can you offer your services nationwide?
What is great about this industry is that I can work nationwide. Obviously, I can work face to face with families in my surrounding area, but via phone or internet, I can work with clients, just in a different capacity. For example, registries are on line, consulting conferences, bedding design, etc.
3.Marketing for a small business is always a challenge, what methods have worked best for you so far?
I love to problem solve, so I have enjoyed marketing. I have press releases that I send out to anyone and everyone that are involved in the baby industry, magazines, women’s organizations and networking groups, newsprint, media, entrepreneur groups, etc. I also enjoy writing articles about products or how to. For example, I just wrote an article for Momstalkradio, “How to choose the correct high chair”.
4.What’s a Day in the Life of Shawn like?
A day in the life of Shawn. WOW!! I wake up at 5 a.m., work out, shower and in the kitchen by 7 a.m. I put my oldest, Austin (9) on the bus at 8:30. On M,W,F my youngest, Brock (4) goes to preschool at 9:00. If I have appointments or need to catch up on Blue Skye Baby, He will stay until 2 or 3. T & R, Brock & I run errands or stay at home, I am a home body. Evenings entail dinner, homework, baths, favorite TV shows and bedtime. I like to do the majority of my work after everyone goes to bed. Very exciting
5.With 2 children, a husband, house, etc…how do you balance a business with your family?
I am still trying to learn to balance everything. My computer is in the kitchen so that allows me to be in the main area of our house and check emails throughout the day. I do not do any BSB work until beds are made, laundry is folded etc. I like to make sure my family & house are in order before I start on my business. I still consider myself a stay at home mom first and a mompreneur second. I love, love, love my new business because I feel this comes very easy to me as does taking care of my family. I have the best of both worlds.
6.What kind of feedback have you gotten so far from clients and people who hear about your business?
Baby Planning is a double edged sword. It is so new, some are a bit apprehensive in the beginning. As I explain the concept and they see how passionate I am for this industry, they see the potential and my vision. On the other side, because it is so new, people are very curious and take the concept in with open arms and wish we were around when they had young children.
Thanks so much Shawn for sharing your Mompreneur experience with us and be sure to visit Blue Skye Baby and tell any mom-to-be friends about it…hey wouldn’t an hour of consulting time make a great baby shower gift…help mom figure out what to return to the store, what to keep, and how to get everything ready!
