Back to the beach on a snowy afternoon…
Even though I find myself in the month of March, the endless slew of snowstorms has left me with a bad case of the winter blahs. No, I’m not talking about seasonal light disorder here, but rather that fed-up feeling that comes with a record season of snowfall, one too many ice storms and double digit negative temperatures that has kept our usually outdoorsy family stuck indoors.
Then finally, one Sunday afternoon, my husband and I began toying with the idea of heading back to Europe again this summer. While with me back at the office we would never get the same amount of time off as my mat leave allotted me last year, we would have a solid 3 weeks to work with. While my little 15 month old son is pretty happy to be in just about any environment, we were curious to get our 3 year old daughter’s opinion on more plane rides, and another summer abroad… Her reaction? She was ecstatic and what started as a dreary and frigid day turned into a fun afternoon of planning. We let her choose the villa we would rent (within reason, of course), the stopover country activities, and even built a packing list together - that part resembled something like this: my baby, my books, my bed, my baby brother, oh and my princess dress, my princess shoes, maybe my crown, my bathing suit and a granola bar. Hmmm…seems like a pretty reasonable list to me? ; ) Which begs the question: Am I travelling with a toddler or a 3 year old rockstar?
All silliness aside, the point that I am trying to make is that even though the winter might seem endless, you can create a little hope and distraction with such an activity. The best part is that it gives you all something to look forward to. So even if I have a bad day at the office, a late night spent caring for my sick little monkeys or even if the weather man announces yet another storm, and he has, for tomorrow, I can still look ahead to our summer escape and feel that much closer to warmth, fun and relaxation, if there is such a thing!
