Who knew I would be listening to NPR…

6 March 2008 No Comment

I used to tease my husband for listening to National Public Radio.  I used to call it audio for nerds.  Mean, I know.  However now that I find myself with little or no ME time, I have learned to appreciate my morning commute a little bit more…

As a working mom, it is difficult to stay on top of current events, so I actually started listening to NPR.  I hate to admit it, but I have really come to enjoy it and it actually gives me the fodder I need to hold my own in the office social network and at functions.  It feels good to be able to contribute more than an amusing anecdote about the latest episode of The Backyardigans. It brings me back from Dora and into Obama.  And the best part of all…I actually found an amazing mom read, that I know you will all at least appreciate: I discovered the poems of Deborah Garrison.

One morning there was a reading from her book of poems:  The Second Child.  In it, she manages to convey every emotion that I go through on a given workday.  Her words gave me comfort.  The commonalities gave me hope.  While her poem offered no solutions, it gave me strength to get through that day.  Her thoughts made me realize: I was not alone.  There was a mother out there who felt just like me.  And if she felt that way, then so did other moms everywhere…

While I have yet to read the rest of the book, I did make a point to order myself a copy.  I will let you know if all of her words strike such a powerful chord. Nonetheless, it is still one of the nicest finds that I have stumbled upon in quite some time.

Thanks to NPR for breaking through to me and actually becoming a part of my daily routine.  Hey, I guess it is still hip to be square!
