Mom’s, Are you Listening?

800px-Kopfhoerer_in-ear.jpgThere is an entire world of Internet radio shows out there tailored to moms and motherhood. Mom Podcasts are growing in popularity because of the versatility they offer to today’s busy moms.

What is podcasting you ask? A podcast is basically an Internet radio show that can be listened to on demand either right on a computer, via a music player and speakers, or can be downloaded to a portable audio player.

Podcasts cover a variety of available subject matter for all tastes and interests. Perhaps the mommy blogging craze has lead to the mommy podcast craze. Mom podcasts are popping up all over the place and those that have been around for awhile are increasing in popularity as more and more moms discover them.

“The trend will continue to grow and expand as more moms realize the potential of both creating and listening to podcasts. More are learning that you don’t need expensive equipment or have to conquer complicated technology - it can be as simple as talking about and listening to topics you love,” says Kelly McCausey from WAHM Talk Radio. She adds, “Moms with a ‘geek streak’ will enjoy learning how to set things up and do everything on their own. Others with a gift for gab and no great love for the background activities can take advantage of low cost production services.”

Looking for information online is nothing new for moms; there are an abundance of mommy websites out there providing both information and support. Aside from these, a plethora of mom blogs and forums offer moms the chance to commiserate with each other in the world of cyberspace. Tech savvy moms love being able to Google their topic of choice, be it teething remedies or potty training solutions, and have pages and pages of information pop up before their eyes. Internet radio is just another form of delivering this information, but in a more friendly and direct way. It’s more akin to girlfriends chatting together and moms can listen while they do other things. The beauty is that they do not have to be glued to the computer screens to tune in.

According to Erin from the Manic Mommies, a show for moms trying to do it all, and do it well, the #1 comment they receive from listeners is “Thank you for making me feel like I am not alone.” And she adds, “What I think moms get from listening to Manic Mommies is open, frank and honest discussion about motherhood. We don’t sugar coat it and we are very honest about our own shortcomings. And, many of our listeners think we are actually very funny! We moms have to just do the best we can and not be so hard on ourselves and each other; it’s OK to laugh, too! Why do we have to make it all seem so serious all the time?”

Another plus about podcasts is that they can be listened to on demand, whenever the time is right, which is a huge benefit for moms. Most podcasters will produce a show on a schedule, but once it’s published, it’s available for downloading and can be listened to whenever a mom has the time, even on the go.

Podcasting truly is the closest thing to a portable support group or mom-friendly company right when you need it. Tune in and you’ll soon find out why.
