Home sweet home!

20 July 2007 No Comment

Well we made it! After 22 hrs of flying, 3 planes, two buses and a taxi, we’re finally home! Yes, after 2 months of travelling through Europe with my tiny tots in tow, it was time to come home. It wasn’t long before our arrival was soon met with the question that was on everyone’s lips… “So come on, tell us, how was it really…  Admit it, it was hard, wasn’t it?”

Well, I hate to disappoint all of those Negative Nellys out there, but to tell you the truth, it actually went rather well.  Oh sure there was the odd meltdown here and there, a few public outbursts, broken objects, a bout with the stomach flu, a venomous insect bite and more, but all in all, we had a great time.  My tiny travelling companions proved themselves to be absolute troopers.  Even in flight, they behaved better than some adults!

While my children actually inspired this trip, I would like to thank them for inspiring us, my husband and I, to see more than just far-off places, but to go beyond and find beauty and interest in even the simplest and most unexpected places.  Yes, our little world travellers introduced us to sites and sounds that no tour guide would even think of showing you: From countless fountains, to butterflies, geckos to accordian players, and birds, each were met with verve and endless enthusiasm.  Doorknockers, Vespas, bunk beds, European plumbing, gelato shops, foreign languages, stray dogs, cactus, mist and fog, waves and seabreezes - all rediscovered. We found beauty not only in the countries that we visited, but also in the everyday.

While this particular blog post is filled with sweet nostalgia, there are also stories of the good, the bad, the ugly and the totally rioutous side of family travel. So it’s safe to say that my next few entries will focus on our family’s adventures abroad.  Yup, this is just the beginning…
