MomPreneurs Rule!
Costco puts out a magazine each month and this month’s feature story is about Moms in business. Mom entrepreneurs if you will, and I am proud to be a part of that club. It’s a great story featuring some fabulous mompreneur stories and links to resources for those who will be bitten by the wahm bug after reading it.

It’s no wonder so many moms are turning to this flexible alternative, with the cost of daycare and the need for 2 incomes, staying home is often not an option. Working from home offers a great alternative to earn some extra income and still be a hands on full time mom. It’s also important for moms who maybe want to stay home, or have to stay home because of the high costs of daycare, but also want to have something grown up to call their own.
On an episode of Oprah not too long ago, they were discussing the mommy wars, the battle between staying home and working and what’s better. Well, there is no better, either way is right if it’s right for you. There was one woman there with her grown daughter who made a comment that although she’s proud of the daughter she raised, she feels like she missed out on life by staying home and now feels like she cannot do anything, since she’s been out of the work force for over 20 years and does not have the necessary skills to get the kind of job she’d like. She was torn between regret, thinking maybe she should have worked, but still happy she got to spend the time with her daughter growing up. It was sad, she hesitated even admitting it, it was hard to admit I’m sure.
My hope is that with this new trend of mompreneurs, maybe our generation of moms won’t have those issues. We won’t have regrets because for many of us, we can have it both ways, we can be home to enjoy the moments of our kid’s lives and build our own businesses at the same time. The kids will grow up, but hopefully we’ll still have our businessess in one form or another once they are gone.
For me, becoming a wahm kinda just happened. I started my collage business after discovering this new digital photo editing hobby by mistake. I knew nothing, just did some research and built my website, teaching myself along the way. I discovered a vast WAHM online community that I could never have done this without. It takes time and you learn as you go. Staying home didn’t happen until well into my business venture. After Baby was born, the cost of daycare for 2 kids was basically my entire salary, so it made more sense to stay home. I never did see myself as a stay at home mom though, even growing up, so it was strange, but it was nice that I had my business already started and now was able to devote much more time to it and make it successful and make it grow. The plan was always that I’d go back to work once the kids were in school full time. But now, my thoughts are, with a few more years before the kids are both in school, I’m pretty confident I’ll be making more from home than I could outside and won’t have to go back to work outside the home, but will just have more time to work from home. I love that I can work on something I really enjoy, make money doing it, and do it from home.
If you are a wahm, be sure to visit the Magazine’s On the Job section and send us your WAHM Business Profile. We want to feature as many Work at Home Moms as possible, to show a variety of possible options to inspire other moms.
