Help! - I woke up with bangs…

27 March 2007 One Comment

Something strange happened to me this morning…  After my 2 minute shower - wait, that’s not the strange part, I toweled off and combed my hair. It was then that I realized that I had bangs.  No, I didn’t go to the hairdresser earlier in the week, it seems that Mother Nature herself had decided to surprise me with this new totally uneven, and most unmanageable little fringe of a hairdo.

Oh sure, I had been losing the odd clump of hair here and there in the shower, which I had attributed to the whole hormone rebalancing that goes on after having a child, but I didn’t think that it would be even worse with baby #2.  Watch out girls, thinking of having another baby? No one seems immune from the 3-4 month hairloss hysteria!

The worse part is that you would think that it would fall out in a nice pattern or something natural, but whoa mama - it does not!  Instead long pieces fall, making way for those wispy underbits to show through and eventually make their way front and center, when the next thing you know….you’ve got bangs!  They’re so awkward looking that they even make your “home haircut” attempts in Grade 5 look kinda cute in comparison.  I kid you not!

Oh joy!  Is there no end to the wonderful gifts that are bestowed upon our post-partum bodies?  No, no, nature is much too kind to us girls!  Ski slope breasts, accordion and/or shelf bellies, stretch marks, new freckles, dark circles and so much more…

Okay, so what to do?  The obvious thought process led me to get out some styling aids and try to tame these wispies - yikes, it didn’t work!  The hairs are so fine, that they look like globby bits stuck to your forehead the minute they come into contact with any such product.  What next…  a cute barrette?  What the hell, do I think I’m Cameron Diaz in a babydoll dress?  I can’t pull off that look!  Still thinking… okay, re-wet it, mess it up as it dries and leave the rest of my hair wavy.  Hey, that’s not too bad.  It kinda blends in, except for the odd peekaboo piece. The only problem here is that I hate having my hair in my face when I’m chasing the kids all day.

11:00 am - Okay my hair is driving me nuts and my little son is entertaining himself by grabbing and yanking even more pieces out.  Have you ever tried to remove something from the sticky little grasps of a 4 month old?  I’d have had better luck opening a jar of pickles on the first try. That’s it!  I’m tying it back and putting on hairband.  Actually, that’s not bad.  I created a low twist in the back and then used a skinny double elasticized hair band to keep the wispies from creeping their way into view.  It has a kind of Grecian-inspired look that’s soft and pretty.  This is way better than the globby bits and much more comfortable than a headful of dangling waves.  Ahhh…the only bad part is that it looks like I’m stuck with this new look till mid summer.

Hey, did I mention the many joys of motherhood already? ; )

With each kid I’ve gone through this. It always starts at about 4 months post partum. I make art on the shower wall with all the hair that falls out. For the last two times, I’ve just cut it all off - I notice the loss a lot less then. It helps to know others struggle with this too!
