Sleep deprivation makes mommy idiots. I am a prime example this morning. Baby is sick, just a cough and runny nose, nothing more serious than that, not even a fever, but he’s pretty miserable. He is a man afterall and he sure is acting like a sick man if I ever saw one. Last night hubby chose to sleep on the couch (his location of choice since we came home) so he could actually sleep. Good choice, since Baby was whining every 20 minutes from 9pm to 1:30am. Then he finally slept till about 6:30. I think, I really cannot be sure, all the getting up and travelling the 10 feet to Baby’s room every 20 minutes tends to make me a wee bit delirious and who know, he might have woken up several other times and I just don’t even remember anymore.

But in my sleep deprived state this morning I’ve made two stupid mommy mistakes. First off, the laundry incident. I put a load of laundry in and started the machine as normal. I walk away. A few minutes later, sitting here checking my emails, I hear a strange sound. I can only liken it to the sound of, oh shall we say, Niagara Falls! Ohhh…My….God…suddenly I remember, last night Hubby unhooked the bathroom vanity in our half bath down here because we need to take everything out of there to have to floor re-done due to a water leak, how appropriate. So since the pipes are all connected, water is GUSHING out onto the bathroom floor. I prompty stop the washing machine and proceed to kick myself in the butt. Idiot. Floor is being replaced anyways tomorrow, so I guess no harm done.

Later, medicine time. I gave Big Boy some cough medicine, he seems fine other than a lingering nighttime cough. Then I grab the other bottle of medicine and give it to Baby who is in greater need. Now, you would think that the act of getting Baby to take medicine out of a spoon thingy would have made something click in my head that this was not his medicine right. Oh no, I gave him a 1/2 tsp, and then as I was putting the cap back on the bottle I realized, wait a second, normally there is a dropper for infant medicine, OMG, I used another one of Big Boy’s medicines, one I got when I was away last week since I had not brought any with me. Looking at it, I saw that I gave him half of what was directed for 2 years and up so that should be ok right? He didn’t get a full 2 year old dose and he is only like 2 lbs under the weight for the 2 year old dose. So that’s ok right, no harm done, maybe he’ll take a nice long nap? It’s ok right? I am an idiot. I was doing it and realizing something wasn’t right, but I am so tired it just didn’t click until it was too late. On the plus side though, he took the spoon dispenser just fine and didn’t even spill anything.

Mommy’s need sleep ok people, seriously. We are dispensing medication and using knives and driving cars…we NEED sleep or somebody is going to get hurt here.
