View from the Bridge

24 February 2007 No Comment

Having children can really make you see the world in a new light, through the eyes of a child everything is so much more magical and interesting. Things we see as obvious or never even think about because they just “are” children question. And then you are left to come up with an answer that will satisfy the curious mind of a child.

On my aforementioned trip home this past week we took a drive into the city which included a drive over a big bridge. We live on the outskirts of a city, but it’s a small city in comparison to Montreal so bridges this big are a novelty to Big Boy. Think bridges like you’d find in New York City. We actually crossed the smallest of the bridges but it still stirred up many comments from Big Boy.

“Are we going on dat big bridge mommy?”

” Yes, we are.”

“That’s a big bridge mommy.”

“Yes, it is.”

“What’s that noise I hear Mom, I hear a noise?”

“It’s a metal bridge honey, it doesn’t have a normal road so it makes noise.”

“Well, I hear dat noise mommy.” Look Mom, there are lots of towers over there. Does Uncle Ric live in one of those towers Mommy?”

“Well, I suppose he does, but we can’t see his tower from here really.”

“Well, I think he lives in dat very big one there Mommy, can I go in dat very big tower there Mommy?”

“Maybe we can go in that tower another day, today we are going to Uncle Ric to take pictures.”

“Mommy is dat water, Mommy?”

“Yes it is honey.”

“Well, I think dat water’s cold mommy.”

“Yes, it has ice in it, do you see it?”

”I see the ice Mommy. Are we very high in the sky Mommy?”

“We are pretty high up on this bridge, yes.”

” Well, I think dat bridge over there is even higher and bigger mommy.”

“Yes, those other bridges are bigger than this one.”

“But this is a big bridge too Mommy, and noisy Mommy and I want to go in the towers Mommy, I don’t want to go in dat water, it’s cold water Mommy, can we go on the bridge again after later mommy.”

“Yes we’ll come back this way later.”

I stopped noticing the noise long ago and am too busy watching the road ahead to even notice the other bridges, the water, or the skyline for that matter. It is nice to get to see things through the eyes of a child sometimes, notice the little things we take for granted all the time, like the view from a bridge which really is quite amazing if you look around.
